The advent of human organoids, stem cell-derived 3D culture systems, allowed to mimic the architecture and physiology of human organs in remarkable morphological details and functions. Indeed, they are considered by many to be “the tool” for the study of human disease and complement animal models. Although it is still challenging to fully address questions that are specific to the understanding of human biology and disease, human organoids have been used to study diseases, genetic disorders and cancers, as well as for toxicological and pharmacological studies and pre-clinical applications. Given the rapid technical advances in the field, our understanding of human biology will accelerate in the next years enabling us to provide unprecedented opportunities to improve human health.
