This position is open in the team Immunopathology and Therapeutic Immuno-intervention, as part of the EU H2020-India DBT project, under supervision of Jagadeesh Bayry.
Influenza is a major health burden with an estimated 500,000 deaths annually and many more diseased people. A pandemic with influenza virus could affect millions of people world-wide and disrupt society as seen with the SARS-CoV pandemic in 2003 and SARS-CoV-2 in 2020. Despite the relatively small number of affected subjects and case-fatality rate of 11%, the impact (economic losses) were enormous. Pandemic flu has much greater potential for spread than SARS and is likely to have a greater impact on health and disruption of the global economy. What starts with a relatively simple flu infection, may evolve to a serious or fatal secondary infection of the respiratory tract. Some people are more likely to develop severe illness, especially elderly, children ≤5 years, chronically diseased people, and pregnant women. Flu vaccination is the best way to prevent serious complications and death caused by flu.
From a global health perspective, the lack of effectivity, availability, affordability and accessibility of flu vaccines significantly limits our ability to respond to the seasonal flu every year and in the event of a pandemic. Currently, a low vaccine effectivity of 40% implies that 60% of vaccinated people are not sufficiently protected, with low confidence further contributing to limited uptake/immunization.
In this EU H2020-India DBT project, our aim is to develop next generation influenza vaccines with low antigen dose and low cost to elicit optimal, robust and durable antibody responses by using novel generation adjuvants and recombinant influenza antigens devoid of immunosuppressive domains. The consortium includes 9 teams from Europe, one from USA and 6 teams from India.
The initial offer is for one year but can be extended further depending on the progress. Salary is based on the experience of the candidate.

A one-year renewable post-doc position is available in the lab "Immunopathology and Therapeutic Immuno-intervention" at CRC.
Abstract of the project
Basophils, although rare, play a key role in the initiation and propagation of allergic diseases. It is therefore conceivable that basophils are potential therapeutic targets for allergic diseases. However, there is currently no specific approach to target them. Since IL-3, secreted mainly by T cells, is the most potent activator of basophils, we propose to finely dissect the IL-3 axis in various facets of human T cell-basophil crosstalk in vitro, in situ in allergic patients, and in vivo in genetically engineered mouse models. In addition, in a translational research setting, we will interfere with the IL-3 axis as a novel means to inhibit basophil activation and treat allergic diseases. This ANR funded project involves four partners and the objective of our group, as project coordinator, is to dissect the interaction between human regulatory T cells and basophils at the cellular and molecular level. This is a follow-up to our report published in Science Immunology (2018). (https://immunology.sciencemag.org/content/3/23/eaan0829.long)
