Hemophilia treatment innovations: views from a long-standing insider

Currently Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine at the University of Milan, Italy, Prof. Mannucci was Scientific Director of the IRCCS Cà Granda Maggiore research hospital from 2010 to 2015.

Until November 2010, he directed the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at the IRCCS Ospedale Maggiore in Milan. In addition to having received several international scientific awards*, he was President of the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis in 1996-1997. He was Editor in Chief of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (from 1998 to 2006) and Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Internal Medicine (from 2009 to 2017).

Prof. Mannucci has authored more than 1300 publications in the field of the hemophilias (especially the side-effects of therapy), von Willebrand disease and rare coagulation disorders (molecular basis and therapy), pathophysiology and genetics of coronary artery disease and venous thromboembolism and hereditary thrombophilia. He currently has a H-index of 126 according to Scopus. His more recent research interests deal with the issue of polypharmacy in older medical patients and on the effects of environmental pollution on health and disease.

*Prix international de l’Association française de l’hémophilie, Murray Thelin Award from the National Hemophilia Foundation, Robert Grant Medal Award and Distinguished Career Award from the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Ham Wasserman Lecture and Award from the American Society of Hematology, Jean Bernard Award from the European Hematology Association.
